1964 Saab 96 Bullnose, two stoke, triple carb with Monte Carlo running gear and trim.
Bought from original owner 5 years ago, the ground-up restoration was started about 10 years ago and has been finished to a high standard. The original red colour was fully stripped and repainted in silver. Underside and fender joint areas have all been internally rust proofed. Seats and door panels are original and in excellent condition. Dashboard has been upgraded to Monte Carlo spec with full gauges and MC identification. Column control of wipers and electric washers have also been added. Trunk space is immaculate and has all original trim and woodwork. Exterior chrome & stainless is original and in excellent condition. All badges are present and in excellent condition as are the lamps and lenses. All 4 rear mud flaps are present, original and look good.
The car was delivered new in the Netherlands in May of 1964, shortly after which a Hollandia sliding steel sunroof was installed. Car was brought to Canada in 1965. The sunroof still opens and closes smoothly and has new drain hoses recently installed. Other original accessories include (now vintage) Fiamm Road Master air horns, Hella teardrop fender mirrors and Hella accessory reversing lamp (working from internal shifter switch). Recent change to Hella H4 headlamps with 45 watt bulbs (lower wattage to ease load on generator) as well as Ashcraft's Draken Vents on the hood, as much for style as practicality.
The restoration was undertaken to upgrade the car to a higher spec and the decision was made to keep the car more drivable by changing the engine to an intermediate spec of engine, 46 horsepower, up from the stock 38 HP but more useable every day than the large port 60 HP version. Re-built 850CC uses the MC's triple Solex carbs and has a more convenient, oil injection system (no need to mix gas). The engine has new pistons & rings, shows 120, 123, 122 PSI compression, new crank & rod bearings, all new cooling hoses & fan belt, new plugs/points/cap/rotor/wires, new correct air filter for 'Darth Vader' intake and has been run on synthetic injection oil for past 5 years. Exhaust is stock at the front muffler and stainless steel to rear custom stainless steel replica of stock muffler. The car also uses the larger MC rad for added cooling capacity.
Transmission is shifted via column shift and has been upgraded to a re-built, 4 speed, full synchro gearbox with a change to stronger Saab 99 3-point inner CV joints and Monte Carlo outer CV joints.
Brake system has been fully rebuilt with new, stainless steel pistons in calipers as well as stainless sleeve & piston in master. Front and rear wheel hubs are 4 bolt Monte Carlo spec with Monte Carlo front disc brakes and upgraded to split system master cylinder. Brake calipers, pads & discs, master are all Lockheed UK and are interchangeable with MGB products. Rear shoes also cross-reference to BMC ADO16 models. The car comes with standard Saab Monte Carlo steel wheels (with trim rings & hub caps) and have been fitted with new Michelin ZX 165 R15 tires. The car also has a more stylish wheel configuration of Saab branded Ronal Minilite-style wheels with 195-65R 15 Falken Sincera Touring SN211 tires.
It's a stylish, unusual and strong running example of a car that was way ahead of its time. This is a rust free classic with all bits working properly. Electrics are Bosch and are 12 volt. Windshield wiper arms and blades are original with new rubber inserts. Door & trunk locks are Assa and have original Saab branded keys. All glass is correct. This car has shoulder belts for the front passengers.
The Bullnose highlighted Saab's illustrious rally history winning the 1962 and 1963 Monte Carlo rally with the 850 two stroke. Well designed and built, it's a sturdy, lightweight, comfortable car to drive. It always attracts a lot of positive attention when it’s on the streets.
